NEC teases dual-screen Cloud Communicator Android tablet, promises more at CES

Believe it or not, the crew at Engadget HQ will be packing up and headed to CES 2011 a fortnight from today, and it looks as if quite a few undercover products from NEC will be making the same trip. The company has just revealed that its single-screen Cloud Communicator tablet will be on display, but moreover, a dual-screen version will be making it awfully tough for the former to get any attention whatsoever. Now, dual-screen devices aren't exactly new, but an Android tablet with a pair of 7-inch LCDs is definitely more inciting than Kno's education-minded megabook and the two-faced e-readers that swarmed CES 2010. Details on the hardware are few and far betwixt, with NEC only revealing that both panels will be touch-enabled, WiFi, 3G and Bluetooth modules will be baked in and that a stylus will be included for good measure. Also, it'll fully support the use of different programs on each LCD, which -- if executed properly -- could melt our faces into the desert sand below. Sadly, our prying for images got us nowhere, but we're assured to see more at next month's extravaganza. Hang tight.

NASA Green Flight Challenge proposes 'pocket airports,' invites you to fly 'em all

NASA's Green Flight Challenge proposes neighborhood 'pocket airports,' invites you to fly 'em all
Soon we'll be hopping on a jet plane, heading to Vegas, living the life, playing with gadgets, and not getting a lot of sleep. Flying to Nevada for CES on a plane is easy, but getting to the airport can be a challenge if you live out in the country. NASA wants that fixed as a sort of spin-off of its Green Flight Challenge, a prize awarded to an aerial vehicle that can manage 200mpg at 100mph while emitting only 78db of noise at 250 feet. It would also need a very short takeoff and landing, something that would allow it to land on what's being called a "pocket airport." These rinky-dink runways would fit on just two acres of land and would launch or receive an (ultimately autonomous) aircraft every 30 seconds. The idea is that such strips could be scattered about suburban areas and provide quick, convenient shuttling to real airports and, presumably, to other pocket airports. Now, we wonder, will we still need to empty our pockets before boarding?

Motorola's 'Tablet Evolution' video teases some Honeycomb at CES

It's on, suckers. Motorola just sent us this "Tablet Evolution" teaser video for their CES 2011 announcements, and it doesn't mince any words -- it calls the iPad a "giant iPhone" and says the Samsung Galaxy Tab is running Android "for a phone" before closing out with a buzzing bee over that new red Motorola logo. That certainly suggests some Honeycomb action to us -- and it fits perfectly with Andy Rubin demonstrating the next-gen version of Android on a Motorola tablet back at D: Dive Into Mobile. You know, the tablet that's since leaked out with a Verizon logo on it. Yeah, we're ready for this to go down -- and you know we'll be there live as it happens.

Two Kinects join forces to make 3D telepresence, enable virtual light saber battles (video)

UC Davis's Oliver Kreylos has been responsible for two of our most impressive Kinect hacks yet. He was one of the first to get proper 3D video out of the thing, following that up by pairing up two of the cameras, one to fill in the gaps of the other. You might have thought he was just playing around but no -- oh no. There was a method to the madness and his ulterior motive has been revealed: 3D telepresence. This is what he's been working on all along and he has an early version operational, using the output from two Kinects in a remote office to beam a 3D representation of another person to his display, which he can navigate around (and through) using a Wiimote. Meanwhile, the viewer can see the position of Oliver in real-time, a virtual camera floating around and enabling them to maintain eye contact despite her not actually looking at either physical camera. That demonstration is embedded after the break along with a somewhat fanciful follow-up in which Kreylos engages in a rather... protracted lightsaber battle against the forces of evil.

Official Kinect drivers now available for Windows and Ubuntu

kinect
If the recent demonstrations of the Kinect's potential have you all hot and bothered, brace yourself: official drivers are now available for both Windows and Ubuntu. It's all thanks to the OpenNI (Natural Interaction) initiative, where PrimeSense -- the company behind the Kinect -- happens to be one of the founding members.

OpenNI aims "to accelerate the introduction of Natural Interaction applications into the marketplace," and releasing drivers is a good first step. Binaries for 32-bit Windows and both 32 and 64-bit Ubuntu systems are available for download and source code is also available. There's also a full OpenNI user guide in PDF format.

Here's hoping driver availability leads something more than slick demos -- we'd love to actually be able to control our desktops this way.

Yahoo is shutting down Delicious, heralding the end of a tasty era [Updated]

Del.icio.us has lived a long life -- having been around since 2003 -- but Yahoo! has confirmed the demise of the delectable bookmark service. It comes as no surprise after news of the company's recent layoff blitz, and the Delicious team has been on the list of expected victims for well over a year. It's not the only property getting the "sunset" treatment from Yahoo!, either; Yahoo! Picks, Yahoo! Bookmarks, Alltheweb, Altavista, and MyBlogLog are all going the way of the dinosaur along with it.

While it's a bit sad to see such an aged fixture of the Internet begin to fade away, it's also a sign of the times. Bookmarking services in general just don't seem to have the draw that they did back in their glory days. Browsers that sync bookmarks, whether through a built-in system or a plug-in, have taken a firm hold on the issue of multi-computer bookmarking. Social networks have become just as good at sharing links as sites that were built to simply share links. So really, mourning sites like Delicious is akin to yearning for the days when we had to install a special plug-in just to get tabs in our browsers, isn't it?

Even if it isn't, there's still the fact that it had the misfortune of becoming a property of Yahoo! -- a company that can't even keep itself relevant. So this round of layoffs, "sunsets," mergers, and scale-backs is not likely to be the last.

DIA Parrot digital photo frame by nodesign is not a digital photo frame

How do you a frame a digital photo without framing it? That's the mind-bending question considered by Parrot and the nodesign agency, and the "mysterious object" known as the DIA Parrot is their answer. Just what is it? We'll let Parrot explain.
What is striking is its 10x4 inch high resolution screen. Dismantled, deconstructed, disconnected from the frame as if there was nothing behind, this screen is transparency, is light. The picture, your photo, appears through this "light box" in a brand new aesthetic dimension...

"The photo frame designed by Jean-Louis Frechin is very mysterious," continues Henri Seydoux. "Jean-Louis was smart or 'crazy' enough to dismantle the LCD screen we get used to, and the result is quite simply magical. We don't see where the photo comes from... It is simply there, on this transparent and half-dismantled screen... It is prestidigitation!"
Look for it to set you back $500 when it launches in February. You didn't expect a brand new aesthetic dimension to come cheap, did you?

Engadget Chinese gets hands-on with the Meizu M9

We harbored our doubts as to whether the Meizu M9 would ever be more than unicorn, prancing around the grey matter of CEO Jack Wong, but lo and behold, a honest-to-goodness handset just arrived at our Chinese counterparts' door. Our brothers-from-other-mothers at Engadget Chinese have yet to put that Retina Display-alike through the wringer, but their cameras have been popping nonstop, and if you're curious about the literal shape of things to come -- or just about any facet of Meizu's customized Android 2.2 UI -- you'll find it in pictures below.

Android 2.3 source code now available, you can now bake your own Gingerbread

Not even 2 weeks after the official unveiling of the Nexus S, Gingerbread's source code is now available to the public. Jean-Baptiste Quero, an engineer at Google's Android Open-Source Project (AOSP), posted the announcement early this afternoon on a Google Groups message board, making Android devs the world over a very happy group of people.

Quero had warned that it would take several hours for the code to finish pushing to the servers, but it should all be available now at Kernel.org -- but don't be surprised if speeds are crawling. Also keep in mind that this is just source code. If you don't know what to do with it, you should probably just wait a day or so, so the speeds aren't so bad for the various developers who will be putting it to immediate use.

And you can bet the dev community is already hard at work doing just that. Custom ROMs (like CyanogenMod) are built using the Android source code from the AOSP, so it's now only a matter of time (possibly just days, knowing this community) before new versions of popular ROMs are released with Android 2.3 underpinnings.

Nexus One owners can probably expect an update pushed to their phones sometime soon as well, since it doesn't usually take long after the AOSP release.

For those who can't stand the wait, you can have a small taste of Gingerbread right now by installing its updated keyboard. The APK is available in a forum thread at XDA Developers for Android 2.1 and 2.2, and it should work fine for most devices, though Sense might possibly cause some trouble if you've got that. Your phone doesn't have to be rooted, either. Once you install the APK, simply go to Android's Language & Keyboard settings, uncheck "Android Keyboard" and check "Gingerbread Keyboard." It may not be the full OS, but at least it's something!

Apple, Google Diss the DoD Over Mobile Security

Julie188 writes "The Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) has long supported the use of BlackBerry smartphones for soldiers. It built a system called Go Mobile to provide secure communications, training, and collaboration applications to mobile soldiers. DISA recently decided to add Android and iPhone to the list of approved devices because of high demand from users. Unfortunately, this choice has become a giant pain in the flank. Why? Because both Apple and Google refuse to give DISA access to their security APIs."
