NEC teases dual-screen Cloud Communicator Android tablet, promises more at CES
Believe it or not, the crew at Engadget HQ will be packing up and headed to CES 2011 a fortnight from today, and it looks as if quite a few undercover products from NEC will be making the same trip. The company has just revealed that its single-screen Cloud Communicator tablet will be on display, but moreover, a dual-screen version will be making it awfully tough for the former to get any attention whatsoever. Now, dual-screen devices aren't exactly new, but an Android tablet with a pair of 7-inch LCDs is definitely more inciting than Kno's education-minded megabook and the two-faced e-readers that swarmed CES 2010. Details on the hardware are few and far betwixt, with NEC only revealing that both panels will be touch-enabled, WiFi, 3G and Bluetooth modules will be baked in and that a stylus will be included for good measure. Also, it'll fully support the use of different programs on each LCD, which -- if executed properly -- could melt our faces into the desert sand below. Sadly, our prying for images got us nowhere, but we're assured to see more at next month's extravaganza. Hang tight.Continue reading NEC teases dual-screen Cloud Communicator Android tablet, promises more at CES

Motorola's 'Tablet Evolution' video teases some Honeycomb at CES

It's on, suckers. Motorola just sent us this "Tablet Evolution" teaser video for their CES 2011 announcements, and it doesn't mince any words -- it calls the iPad a "giant iPhone" and says the Samsung Galaxy Tab is running Android "for a phone" before closing out with a buzzing bee over that new red Motorola logo. That certainly suggests some Honeycomb action to us -- and it fits perfectly with Andy Rubin demonstrating the next-gen version of Android on a Motorola tablet back at D: Dive Into Mobile. You know, the tablet that's since leaked out with a Verizon logo on it. Yeah, we're ready for this to go down -- and you know we'll be there live as it happens.

Official Kinect drivers now available for Windows and Ubuntu

OpenNI aims "to accelerate the introduction of Natural Interaction applications into the marketplace," and releasing drivers is a good first step. Binaries for 32-bit Windows and both 32 and 64-bit Ubuntu systems are available for download and source code is also available. There's also a full OpenNI user guide in PDF format.
Here's hoping driver availability leads something more than slick demos -- we'd love to actually be able to control our desktops this way.

Yahoo is shutting down Delicious, heralding the end of a tasty era [Updated]

While it's a bit sad to see such an aged fixture of the Internet begin to fade away, it's also a sign of the times. Bookmarking services in general just don't seem to have the draw that they did back in their glory days. Browsers that sync bookmarks, whether through a built-in system or a plug-in, have taken a firm hold on the issue of multi-computer bookmarking. Social networks have become just as good at sharing links as sites that were built to simply share links. So really, mourning sites like Delicious is akin to yearning for the days when we had to install a special plug-in just to get tabs in our browsers, isn't it?
Even if it isn't, there's still the fact that it had the misfortune of becoming a property of Yahoo! -- a company that can't even keep itself relevant. So this round of layoffs, "sunsets," mergers, and scale-backs is not likely to be the last.

DIA Parrot digital photo frame by nodesign is not a digital photo frame
Look for it to set you back $500 when it launches in February. You didn't expect a brand new aesthetic dimension to come cheap, did you? What is striking is its 10x4 inch high resolution screen. Dismantled, deconstructed, disconnected from the frame as if there was nothing behind, this screen is transparency, is light. The picture, your photo, appears through this "light box" in a brand new aesthetic dimension...
"The photo frame designed by Jean-Louis Frechin is very mysterious," continues Henri Seydoux. "Jean-Louis was smart or 'crazy' enough to dismantle the LCD screen we get used to, and the result is quite simply magical. We don't see where the photo comes from... It is simply there, on this transparent and half-dismantled screen... It is prestidigitation!"

Android 2.3 source code now available, you can now bake your own Gingerbread
Not even 2 weeks after the official unveiling of the Nexus S, Gingerbread's source code is now available to the public. Jean-Baptiste Quero, an engineer at Google's Android Open-Source Project (AOSP), posted the announcement early this afternoon on a Google Groups message board, making Android devs the world over a very happy group of people.Quero had warned that it would take several hours for the code to finish pushing to the servers, but it should all be available now at Kernel.org -- but don't be surprised if speeds are crawling. Also keep in mind that this is just source code. If you don't know what to do with it, you should probably just wait a day or so, so the speeds aren't so bad for the various developers who will be putting it to immediate use.
And you can bet the dev community is already hard at work doing just that. Custom ROMs (like CyanogenMod) are built using the Android source code from the AOSP, so it's now only a matter of time (possibly just days, knowing this community) before new versions of popular ROMs are released with Android 2.3 underpinnings.
Nexus One owners can probably expect an update pushed to their phones sometime soon as well, since it doesn't usually take long after the AOSP release.
For those who can't stand the wait, you can have a small taste of Gingerbread right now by installing its updated keyboard. The APK is available in a forum thread at XDA Developers for Android 2.1 and 2.2, and it should work fine for most devices, though Sense might possibly cause some trouble if you've got that. Your phone doesn't have to be rooted, either. Once you install the APK, simply go to Android's Language & Keyboard settings, uncheck "Android Keyboard" and check "Gingerbread Keyboard." It may not be the full OS, but at least it's something!

Droid 2 Global maintenance update set to arrive soon, fixes Global calling issues
Proud owner of a Droid 2 Global but seeing some bugs? If so, Verizon has some bug fixes for you on the way. As noted in the image above which was taken from a .PDF off of the Verizon website, it looks like Big Red will be rolling out the update at some point in time soon. When installed, you should find yourself sitting at v2.4.330. As for the bugs it fixes, the .PDF notes the following:
Improvements:
- Device now prepends 011 to Country Code to send SMS messages.
- Device no longer indicates “No Service” after powering up.
- Device no longer resets when changing from Global Mode to GSM/UMTS communication.
- Device now refreshes the user interface display when switching from GSM/UMTS to Global Mode.
- Eliminated the blank screen when dialing the call forwarding string *71.
Other improvements:
- Improved audio during voice calls.
- Reduced user interface lock-ups.
Maybe after the update, Global users won't have so much trouble using their device, you know -- globally. Feel free to discuss the update potential here. [Android Central Forums, Droid Life]
